My Grandmother Alva saved every card I sent her…

…After my Grandmother Alva passed away, I was given a box and in it was every card I ever sent to her – from the postcards of my travels to the handmade birthday cards. It seemed natural to name my card line after her.

It all started when my Grandmother met my Grandfather John. When he asked her name, she gave him a pseudonym; “Evans”, a fictitious last name to keep herself safe from handsome strangers. Little did Alva know that John had also been using “Evans” as his own pseudonym. I suppose this a romantic version of coincidence, but I prefer to think of it as the everyday magic that brings us together.

Both my Grandmother and my Mother, Donna Eve—a self taught artist— helped me gain an appreciation of all things handmade, and understand the importance of honoring all things textile and tactile. Alva often encouraged everyone to buy themselves a “pretty pretty” — a small impractical but necessary pick me up.

Alva and Donna were both incredibly strong women. I hope my work is not only approachable but ultimately romantic as many of the familial stories they told me were steeped in this kind of everyday magic.

I hope you make your own magic by using some of my work to bring you closer together with the ones you could and will always love. I hope my work not only honors the women that I came from, but the women you know — women you want to encourage, empower and embrace.

Sketched and Brush Illustrations and Brush and Pointed Pen Hand Lettering are done exclusively by myself. Cards are Letterpressed and Printed in Brooklyn, New York by Kate Murray of Quick Brown Letterpress. A few pieces were Letterpressed and Printed by Big Wheel Press for their Artist Card Line.
